Samuel A. Rey loves the hospitality industry and is
committed to educating, training, mentoring and
developing young people and others into being Tourism
Cultural Ambassadors.
Mr. Rey has always had a gift for hospitality.
While he was still a student of The Ivanna Eudora Kean
High School, he won the prestigious Alton A. Adams St.
Thomas/St. John Hotel Association 4-year scholarship
award to attend Webber International University in
Florida.
After graduating Cum Laude in 1984, he returned to St.
Thomas and joined the Frenchman’s Reef Resort family as
Assistant Front Office Manager. Serving in various
management roles of the rooms division, he was involved in
the opening of The Morning Star Beach Club, a luxury 96 room
property that is a part of the 524 room Marriott Frenchman’s
Reef Hotel.
Rey accepted the position of Resident Manager for Sapphire Beach
Resort and Marina to open their new facility in 1988. In 1992, he
took on yet another opportunity to open the 300 room Sugar Bay
Resort the
first ever Crowne Plaza Resort, as Associate General Manager
and was retained later by the Wyndham Hotels and Resorts as
Hotel Manager in 1995.
In 1996, He joined
Tishman Hotels Corporation as Property Manager for the
former Hyatt Regency in St. John and was retained as
Operations Manager when Westin purchased the property in
1997. Involved in the training and development of the staff,
Mr. Rey later served in the capacity of Director of Quality
Assurance & Training.
In November of 1999, Rey became one of only five recipients
in the Caribbean to obtain the distinguished Certified
Hospitality Educator (CHE) professional designation through
the Educational Institute of the American Hotel/Motel
Association.
In December 2003, Rey received his Master’s
degree in Education & Curriculum Development with a
specialty in adult education and distance learning from the
University of Phoenix.
Since 1994 Mr. Rey has been an adjunct Professor at the
University of the Virgin Islands. Rey continues to develop
and execute workshops in the areas of Customer Service,
Leadership and Management Development, Interpersonal and
Communications Skills, Team Building and Time Management, as
well as other specialty business development workshops.
He
currently serves on the Education Committee and the
Government Relations Committee for the Virgin Islands Hotel
and Tourism association.
He is also an active member of the Agape S.D.A.
Church where he serves as head elder and other key
supportive roles in the community.
